One of Toppel’s newest and most exciting events is happening on April 7!!! Everyone in the office is really excited and we can’t wait to meet all the great people participating. Things are almost ready, we have a keynote speaker, Ms. Katrina Campins, Founder of The Campins Company, UM Alumna, and contestant on the first season of the Apprentice, at 9:30am and some refreshments to start the day.

After that you can choose one of three seminars: 1. Entrepreneurship is a Career Choice, 2. Ethics and Leadership in an Evolving Global Economy, and 3. Communication Trends in the 21st Century, followed by a free networking lunch.

A second seminar will begin at 1:15pm with three other interesting choices: 1. Modern Healthcare and Implications for the Future, 2.Leveraging Social Media, and 3. Five-Star Service: Hospitality in a Competitive Market.
To finish the symposium there will be a closing session and a reception sponsored by Prudential Financial where students can network with other students, alumni and the panelists.

All the students who attend will receive free business cards and alumni get a special gift. After working at the career center for almost three years this is one of the programs that I find most creative and appealing, because it includes almost every major and interest out there, and the panelists are just amazing.

The Law School Waiting Game!

I must admit that I am a bit indecisive and coming to the decision to go to law school took me a long time. As a result, I didn’t have the benefit of a lot of counseling or preparation. I prepared for the LSAT in 6 weeks and took it late in December and applied late in January. I was told that this was going to be a huge disadvantage because of the rolling nature of the admission process. After the mad rush that was applying to law school, all I can do now is wait, wait for acceptances (hopefully). Next I filled out the FAFSA for financial aid purposes. Another very important step for me is going to be finding scholarships on my own. I have only begun this process, but so far I have found a good site called Fastweb.com. If you are looking for scholarships this would be a good start! In conclusion, don’t procrastinate and keep you’re your hopes up!

Ask the Law School Expert

Last Monday, November 8, 2010, Toppel Career Center hosted an Ask the Law School Expert session with one of the top Law School Admissions Consultants, Ann Levine. She is a University of Miami alumna and returned to give a speech and advice to students who are either considering attending law school or have applied to law school. Ms. Levine is the author of The Law School Admission Game: Play Like an Expert and former director of admissions to two ABA law schools. More than 100,000 applicants have relied upon her advice to get into the law school of their dreams by reading her blog at here.

As a UM alumna, she has passion for the University and returned to speak to her Alma Mater regarding getting into law school. She addressed questions relating to creating an application, what type of information would be pertinent to include, specific questions on applications and advice on attaining scholarships. She explained the importance and how much value law school admissions place on LSAT and GPA scores as well as things one can do to counter a detrimental score. Her insightful and exciting manner of relating to students is stellar. The bonus of attending the session is getting a free copy of her book The Law School Admission Game: Play Like an Expert as an audio recording. Now her advice is portable and can be heard at leisure.
